Capture card or app: what a mobile game streamer needs
"Buy a capture card" is the default advice for streaming anything that isn't the PC itself. For consoles, it's good advice. For a phone, it's worth a second look.
What a capture card does
A capture card turns an HDMI signal into something OBS can show. Consoles output HDMI natively, so for them it's the natural path. A phone doesn't: you need an adapter from USB-C or Lightning to HDMI first.
What a streaming app does
An app like Casttit captures the screen and sound on the phone itself and sends them to the PC over the USB cable you already have. On the PC, it hands OBS a clean window and plays the sound in your headset.
Side by side
| Capture card | Streaming app (Casttit) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Card + phone-to-HDMI adapter + cables | Nothing extra; free to start |
| On your desk | Adapter, card, HDMI and USB cables | The phone's USB cable |
| Phone charges while streaming | Only with an adapter that passes power | Yes, over the same cable |
| Game sound in your PC headset | Needs monitoring in OBS or a mixer | Yes; the phone goes quiet |
| Clean window for OBS | Yes (Video Capture Device) | Yes (Window Capture of Casttit Preview) |
| Consoles and cameras too | Yes | No, phones only |
When a capture card wins
- You stream a console or a camera through the same card.
- You already own one and the adapter.
When an app wins
- You only stream from your phone and don't want to buy hardware.
- You want the game's sound in the headset you already wear, without a mixer. See game sound in your PC headset.
- You use an iPhone on Windows: no Mac needed.
Our take: we built Casttit because for most mobile creators the capture card is the most expensive part of the setup, and it still doesn't solve the sound. Try the app path first; buy the card when you need it for something else.
Questions
Is a capture card better quality?
A good card passes on what the phone sends over HDMI. A streaming app sends what the phone's video encoder makes. For a stream on YouTube or similar platforms, both are far above what viewers' players show.
When is a capture card the right choice?
When you also stream consoles or a camera through it, or when your phone's game can't be captured by an app.
Do I need a powerful PC for an app like Casttit?
A recent 4-core PC is enough; 6 cores or more if you also stream with OBS. See the requirements on our home page.
