USB or Wi-Fi: connecting your phone to your PC for streaming
Cable or wireless? For a stream that has to hold up for hours, the answer is usually the cable. Here's why, and when Wi-Fi makes sense.
Why USB is the safe choice
- Steady. A cable doesn't care if someone at home starts a download or the microwave is on.
- Charging. The phone charges while it streams. Games plus screen capture drain a battery fast.
- Simple. Plug in and Casttit finds the phone. No network names or codes.
When Wi-Fi makes sense
- Your cable is too short for where you want to sit.
- You play with a controller or a cooler that blocks the port.
- Short sessions, with a full battery.
With Casttit, Wi-Fi works with Android phones: in the setup screen, choose No cable? Connect over Wi-Fi. For the best results, keep the PC on a cable to the router and the phone on the router's 5 GHz network, close to it.
Picking the right cable
- Data, not charge-only. If the PC doesn't react at all when you plug in, the cable may only charge.
- The original is best. The cable that came with the phone is a known good one.
- Straight into the PC. Use a port on the PC itself, not a hub or a front-panel port with a long internal lead.
- If the picture freezes now and then, try another cable and another port before anything else: most freezes are the connection. More in Troubleshooting.
The short answer
Stream on a cable; keep Wi-Fi for when a cable really won't do. Ready to set up? Android · iPhone.
Questions
Does the USB cable matter?
Yes. Some cables only charge and carry no data; then the PC won't see the phone at all. Use the cable that came with the phone or a known data cable.
Does Casttit work over Wi-Fi?
With Android phones, yes. iPhones connect over their USB cable.
Will streaming drain my battery?
Over USB the phone charges while you play. Over Wi-Fi it doesn't, and games plus screen capture use a lot of battery.
